The Census is a count of everyone living in the United States, and it takes place every 10 years. It is important for everyone to participate in the Census because the population count decides the number of representatives each state reflects in Congress. States with more people have more representatives helping to make the laws that can make our lives better, and we want to make sure we have as many as we really need. Also, the Census determines how to divide $675 billion throughout all of the states. States with more people who are counted will then have enough money to offer important services and programs to everyone who lives in them. I think everyone should participate in the 2020 Census because it’s a good, easy, and safe way for you to support your family and your neighbors!
The most important thing to remember is that what happens in the 2020 Census affects our future for ten years! Each state will have the same number of representatives and the same amount of money until the next Census in 2030. As a fourth-grader, soon to be fifth-grader, I care a lot about making sure that my New York City public school has enough money to help me and my classmates have everything we need to learn and play. States use the money they get to buy school lunches, hire good teachers, and help kids who need therapy. The money also helps to make it easier to travel in our neighborhoods by building new roads and repairing the train system. It even helps people who are victims of crimes and helps communities after scary disasters like Hurricane Sandy. I also like that the money is used to support senior centers like the ones my four grandparents go to for lunch and exercise. I think everyone should fill out the Census because the more people who participate in the 2020 Census, the better it will be for all Americans, from babies to older people.
My favorite part about the Census is that it is safe and easy to do, even for people who speak a language other than English! Anyone who lives in America can fill out the Census by phone, mail, or online. That means that even though some people are in quarantine because of the Coronavirus, all of us can still fill out the Census! Also, did you know that everyone who works for the Census has to swear under the law to protect your information? The information you give can’t be shared with any other agencies like law enforcement or immigration, and it definitely can’t be used against you. The only purpose of the Census is to make sure that the number of people who live in our community is accurately counted so we can have enough representatives and money to make our communities better! That’s why filling out the Census doesn’t put your family in danger and actually protects and helps your family.
In the same way that we want to treat the earth in a good way by caring for it instead of a disgusting way by doing things like throwing trash on the floor, we also want to care for our communities by filling out the Census. If you were to imagine our community as being just you, how would you feel if people showed they cared about you? I think you as the “Community” would feel happy and excited every time someone filled out the Census and you would feel sad, angry and frustrated if some people decided not to. When you fill out the 2020 Census, you help me and you, you help my family and your family, and you help our whole community.
