The doorbell rang one day and Jaiden ran to the living room and said “MOM SOMEBODY IS AT THE DOOR!” As his mom got up to check the door he waited in the kitchen to hear who was there. He noticed a man talking to his mom about the Census for 2020 and how she had to fill out the form. “What’s the 2020 Census??,” he thought to himself. He heard some things but didn’t understand anything about the census, like why people had to count others.
As soon as his mom got to her computer when she finished talking to the Census worker, he came over to her to ask some questions about the 2020 Census. “ Why do we have to be counted?’’ His mom replied, “So that way everyone knows what amount of money to put in a town for any construction there.” “Construction? Is there anything else that it is used for, mom?” “Yes, Jaiden. The data from the census is used to count the amount of people who are living in one household on April 1st. That way, they can fully understand just how many people are in one community to give the right amount of money to help that community build schools, hospitals, roads, and more!”
Jaiden continued asking his mom more questions. He wondered about when this all started and how often it happens. “What if people move?,” he thought. Mom answered, “The census is taken once every ten years since the population keeps growing and moving. It started in 1790 to help the government figure out how many House of Representatives would represent each state, since each state has a different number of people.”
Jaiden was happy to hear all of that information explaining what the census is and finally realised how important it is. He left his mom alone so she can fill it out. He went to his room and wrote an essay on the 2020 Census.
